Overview
Water-based paints, coatings and their raw materials need protection against microbial growth during storage and use. Today, this protection is mainly achieved by adding biocides to the formulation. However, regulations are becoming stricter, customers are more sensitive, and sustainability is gaining importance. This raises an important question: Can packaging helpto protect the product and reduce the need for biocides? Boxli presents a new approach. Instead of seeing packaging only asa container, we treat it as part of the formulation. With the right packaging design, it is possible to reduce contamination risks, limit air contact, and control the conditions inside the package. In this way, packaging becomes an active element of productprotection. A scientific study was carried out using binder dispersions as a model system. In this study, the biocideconcentration was gradually reduced and combined with optimized packaging designs. The goal was to understand how farbiocide levels can be lowered while still ensuring reliable product protection. The results show that, with suitable packaging, the biocide content can be significantly reduced without losing microbial stability. Product protection can be maintained at thelevel that customers expect – but with less chemical preservative. Another important benefit is long-term performance.Traditional systems often protect the product mainly until the first opening. Boxli aims to ensure protection until the last drop, even during repeated opening and use. By combining material science, microbiology and smart packaging design, Boxli offersa practical and sustainable solution for the future of water-based products. Packaging becomes part of the solution – not justpart of the cost.
