New water-based acrylic resin for high performance 2K systems with carbodiimide

09:50TechFocus Room A

Overview

A novel waterborne acrylic resin with carboxylic functionality is presented, specifically developed for two component (2K) systems crosslinked with carbodiimide. The new polymer enables the formulation of two-component systems without hazard labeling, while providing high resistance to water, staining, and chemical agents, as well as a good balance between hardness and flexibility. The pot life of the resin + crosslinker mixtures is considerably longer than that of other existing technologies, ranging from one working day (8–10 hours) to several weeks, depending on the type of carbodiimide crosslinker used. The performance of the newly developed resin has been evaluated in comparison with a conventional 2K system based on an acrylic resin with hydroxyl functionality and an isocyanate crosslinker, showing competitive results and confirming the potential of this technology.
